'I want to suck your blood...' Return of True Blood – Season Three.
The 14th of January heralds the return of True Blood to British TV screens courtesy of the FX channel. Now in its third season, the story continues to follow telepathic barmaid Sookie Stackhouse and her struggle in a world where everyone knows Vampires exist and there are more beasts on the horizon…
The huge success of season one in America garnered the age old question, why all the interest in Vampires? The simple answer is - immortality. So many of us wonder, what would it be like to live forever? In the case of True Blood, many of the most enjoyable episodes are character driven flashbacks explaining the reasoning behind this immortality (as demonstrated in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Vampire Diaries etc) and what leads these characters to this point. As an avid fan of all things vampire, I am always intrigued by a well thought out back story and True Blood is no exception, both Bill and Eric’s stories give fans great incite into their character and motivation.
The success of True Blood is largely down to the raunchiness of the series, heralding back to the Hammer House ethic of the connection between blood and sex. Humans who are obsessed with Vampires are referred to as ‘fang-bangers’ juxtaposed with those who want to sell their blood, known as ‘drainers’. This all adds to the complexity of the relationship between Vampires and humans, however the premise of the series still remains simple, does Sookie have a choice about her involvement?
If the series is anything like the third book in The Southern Vampire Mysteries by Charlaine Harris, within which True Blood is based upon, then we should expect more blood, gore and romantic shocks and spins to keep us thirsty!
