The Top 10 Of 2010

2010 was a good year. Here is our favourite 10 films from the year, enjoy!!!

  10.   Shutter Island
From the mysterious and epic mind of Martin Scorsese comes the tale of Teddy Daniels a US Marshal investigating the disappearance of a murderess from a hospital for the criminally insane. The best twist in cinema from 2010 keeps you guessing from beginning to end, layers upon layers of doubt creep into the characters and viewers mind as the truth unravels.

9. The Social Network
Another great film from the genius mind of David Fincher depicting the rise and troubles of Facebook inventor Mark Zuckerberg. I reviewed it last year and it remains one of my favourite films of the year.

8. Twilight: Eclipse
(Sneaking this into the Top 10 against Emily’s wishes and above The Social Network and Shutter Island!) Possibly the best film in the Twilight franchise, Eclipse has the right balance of action and romance. More wolves, more vampires and more wondering, ‘Why doesn’t Edward just bite her and get it over with?’ Simply because that wouldn’t be very romantic, would it?

7.  Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
Deathly Hallows marks the beginning of the end for Harry and his chums. This is another saga that many of us have grown up with and will sorely miss when it all comes to the end! It lived up to expectations as the perfect bridging film to start the wizarding action of their final challenge and included an unexpected and impressive animated portion.

6. Toy Story 3
The sequel every person who has grown up with Toy Story has been waiting for. It marked the finale film of the toys we have grown to know and love, introducing some new ones along the way. It includes some truly harrowing scenes causing me and my mum to blub more than the children in the cinema!

5. A Single Man
Colin Firth won the Bafta for his portrayal of George Falconer an English Professor who has lost his partner in a fatal car accident. It portrays a day in his life full of regret, decision and grief. Tom Ford directs Firth beautifully creating a unique character driven and heartbreaking story.

4. Kick Ass
One of the lesser known graphic novels to surface after the huge success of the comic book franchise, Kick Ass hit the box office like an Armenian guy with mental health problems. A good introduction into the world of superhero’s for a person who like their hero’s a little less super and a little more human.

3.  Scott Pilgrim vs The World
Pow! Directed by our own home grown Edgar Wright, his third feature length film is homage to the uber geek. Recommended to the old school video gamer, you will not be disappointed with this fast paced tail of love, evil ex’s and flaming swords a plenty!

2. Up
It’s the Disney film that made the world weep (me included) within five minutes of it starting. It tells the story of an elderly man who rediscovers the wonders of the world through a young boy, a talking dog and an exotic bird. Full of laughs as much as tears this film appealed to children and adults alike (and includes the best short I think Pixar have ever preceded a film with!)

   1. Inception
Undoubtedly the film of the year from the brilliant Christopher Nolan. Not only did he direct this masterpiece, he also wrote and produced it, hiring some of the most talented actors in the business today, including the late great Pete Postlethwaite. Probably one the most creative yet infuriating final shots in cinema history which just makes you want to watch it again and again.

Here's to an equally brilliant 2011!
