The Ones That Got Away...

2010 brought a lot of amazing films and due to the sheer volume which appealed to us we were unable to see quite a few. So here is the top six films of 2010 that slipped through our fingers...

Kayleigh's Picks -

Precious: Based On The Novel Push by Sapphire
I am possibly the only person on the planet who hasn’t seen this film. Hotly tipped for Oscar glory in February 2010 for cast and crew, the film follows the plight of Precious through child abuse, rape, sexual abuse and molestation, the plot sounds wholly depressing yet uplifting.  An Oscar worthy performance by Mo’Nique and a stunning debut for newcomer Gabourey Sidibe, as well as a striking make under for the fabulous Mariah Carey – I’m on the way to Blockbuster now!

The A-Team
Again it seems I’m the last to enjoy Bradley Cooper’s rippling muscles.  Re-inventing the hit 1980’s TV show to critical and financial praise, this film reinforced the idea of the recent spate of remake’s. Where other films have fallen by the way side this reincarnation of The A-Team seems to have not only pushed all the buttons, but blown them up!

Let Me In
Based on the novel by John Ajvide Lindqvist, Let Me In is the English speaking adaptation of the book (preceeded by the original Swedish adaptation), starring Chloe Moretz of Hit Girl status. Having read the novel, I am dying (pardon the pun) to see this adaptation of such an intense and disturbing read. This film becomes the premier for the newly reformed Hammer Horror films empire with the promise of more thrilling horrors to come.

Emily's Picks -

Another Year
I first came across Mike Leigh in depth when I studied his film Secrets and Lies in 6th form college. I admired his unique technique of improvisation and loved the actors he commonly works with. Therefore when his latest film Another Year was released I was very keen to see it. The plot follows a happily married couple in their latter years over the course of a year where they help out their friends who live not as ideal lives. Starring Jim Broadbent and Ruth Sheen it was released in November 2010.

The Kids are Alright
This film came to my attention in an issue of Empire last year. It follows a lesbian couple with two teenage children conceived by the same anonymous sperm donor. The children find their birth father and aim to ingratiate him into family life. The main appeal of this film for me is Mark Ruffalo as I haven’t seen as film with him that I haven’t liked or particular enjoyed the character he plays. I think he is a very understated and underappreciated actor who may receive more attention now that he has been cast to replace Ed Norton as The Hulk. You may also recognise Mia Wasikowska who played Alice in Time Burton’s recent adaptation.

Buried
I’m not going to lie, the main appeal of this film is that it includes Ryan Reynolds and not much else for 95 minutes! However I found the premise really interesting. Reynolds plays Paul Conroy, a contractor working in the Iraqi desert. After being attacked he wakes up buried alive in a wooden box with only a lighter and his mobile phone as company. I’m mainly interested in how he gets out of the box, if he does and of course looking at him for an hour and a half wouldn’t be too bad.

We're headed to Blockbuster now!
